🔬 What to Know Before Your IPL Treatment

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a powerful, non-invasive treatment that targets pigmentation, redness, acne, and signs of ageing. To ensure the safest, most effective outcome, following this pre-treatment guide is essential.

📅 2–4 Weeks Before Your Appointment

• Avoid Sun Exposure: Do not tan (natural sun or solarium) in the treatment area. IPL cannot be performed on sunburned, tanned, or recently sun-exposed skin.
  
• No Fake Tan: Ensure all artificial tanning products are fully removed at least 2 weeks before treatment.
  
• Check Medications: Inform us if you’re taking antibiotics, Roaccutane (must be stopped for 6+ months), or any medications that increase sun sensitivity.
  

🗓 7–10 Days Before Treatment

• Discontinue Active Skincare: Avoid the use of retinol, prescription creams, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide, or any other exfoliating or irritating products.
  
• No Hair Removal That Removes the Root: Do not wax, tweeze, thread, or use depilatory creams on the treatment area. Shaving is fine.
  

🧴 3–5 Days Before Treatment

• Hydrate and Nourish: Keep your skin well-hydrated with a gentle moisturiser and drink plenty of water. Healthy, hydrated skin responds better to light-based treatments.
  
• Avoid Harsh Treatments: No chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or intensive facials on the area prior to IPL.
  

📍 On the Day of Your Treatment

• Clean Skin Only: Arrive with freshly cleansed, product-free skin. No makeup, moisturiser, perfume, deodorant, or SPF on the treatment area.
  
• No Caffeine or Alcohol: Avoid both on the day, as they may increase sensitivity.
  
• Wear Comfortable Clothing: If treating body areas, wear loose-fitting clothes to avoid friction post-treatment.
  

⚠️ Important Notes

• Recent Injectables: Avoid IPL for 2 weeks before or after any dermal filler or anti-wrinkle injections in the treatment area.
  
• Medical Conditions: Always inform us of any changes to your health, skin condition, or medications before your appointment.
  
• Patch Test: A patch test is required at least 24–48 hours before your first IPL session to assess skin response.

💫 What to Expect After IPL

Post-treatment, your skin may feel warm, tight, or flushed for a few hours. Pigmentation may temporarily darken before naturally shedding over 3–7 days. This is part of the renewal process.

Proper care = optimal healing and visible results.

• Restore with Recovery+ Serum: Our hero post-treatment serum! This powerhouse serum calms inflammation, speeds recovery, and rebuilds your skin's natural defences. Apply morning and night starting the evening of your IPL treatment.
• Moisturise as Needed: If extra nourishment is required, layer Harmony+ Day Cream (AM) or Barrier+ Night Cream (PM) on top of your Recovery+ Serum to seal in hydration and comfort.

☀️ Sun Protection Is Non-Negotiable

• Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks
• Apply SPF Daily and Reapply every 2 hours if outdoors
• Wear SPF-protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses

❌Avoid These for 5–7 Days

• Retinoids (e.g. Renewal+)
• Active exfoliants (Glow+, Tone+, Refine+)
• Brightening actives (Inhibit+, Correct+)
• Scrubs, dermaplaning, or microdermabrasion
• Hot showers, saunas, and strenuous exercise
• Makeup for 24 hours (mineral only if needed)
• Picking or rubbing shedding pigment

⚠️ Contraindications for IPL Skin Treatments

IPL is a powerful, non-invasive treatment used to target pigmentation, vascular concerns, acne, and signs of ageing. While highly effective, there are certain medical and skin conditions that may prevent treatment or require extra care.

You may NOT be suitable for IPL if you:

• Have had recent sunburn, tanning (natural or solarium), or fake tan in the treatment area.
• Are currently taking photosensitising medications (e.g. some antibiotics, Accutane, St. John’s Wort)
• Have used Roaccutane (isotretinoin) in the last 6–12 months
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding (IPL is not recommended during this time)
• Have a history of seizures triggered by light (epilepsy)
• Have active skin infections, cold sores, dermatitis, eczema, or open wounds in the treatment area
• Have keloid scarring or a history of poor wound healing
• Have recently had chemical peels, dermaplaning, laser, or injectables (within 2 weeks)
• Have very dark skin (Fitzpatrick V–VI) — requires assessment for pigment risk

Please inform us if you:

• Are taking any medications, including blood thinners, steroids, or hormonal therapies
• Have a history of skin cancer or suspicious lesions in the area to be treated
• Have had recent surgery or are undergoing medical treatment
• Have metal implants, pacemakers, or a history of autoimmune skin conditions
• Are prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation

You may feel a quick, warm snap (like a rubber band) with each pulse, but it’s very tolerable. Most clients find the treatment comfortable and quick.

We typically recommend a course of 3–6 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart for optimal results, depending on your skin concern.

There is minimal to no downtime. Some clients experience temporary redness, warmth, or mild swelling that settles within a few hours. Pigmentation may darken before flaking off naturally.

You may notice a brighter complexion and smoother texture after just one session, but long-term results (especially for pigmentation or redness) build gradually over multiple treatments.
